Idea
This is the reverb effect in my sweet of tools. I want to combine high quality, standard reverb process with a unique granular flair.
Flavor
“The Tower” was an easy choice for the reverb plugin. Both give great impressions of magnitude and space. The interactive animation based on how the effect is firing will mostly be in the form of the “celestial” or “magical” projections around the apex of the tower.
Feel
This should have as few inputs as possible and place a fair amount of emphasis on the graphics. I want it to look impressive and give an accurate and immediate impression of how the plugin is functioning. This should be the kind of effect you leave open to watch is it is used in your DAW. As such, I walk a fine line of what is visually stunning and what makes computational sense. I absolutely cannot sacrifice performance for graphics.
Function
Core Reverb
The starting point will be an implementation of Jon Dattorro’s algorithm outlined in his 1997 paper “Effect Design”. I will work to expand upon and improve this.
Grains
Reverb algorithms already make use of a similar concept in their delays and echoes. By allowing the user to define the bounds of slices based on tempo and starting triggers, sounds similar to granular synthesis can be created in the echoes of different prevalent grains.
Graphic Representation
The “Space” inherent to the stereo width of reverb will be shown in the size of the projection above the tower. The number of grains or resolution will be shown in the geometric shape of the projection i.e. Cube, Dodecahedron, Icosahedron.
